In environmental news, a United States university
team wins a place in the 2011 Solar Decathlon with a state-of-the-art eco-home. The University
of Maryland (UM) has been chosen to take part in the biennial competition, sponsored by
the U.S. Department of Energy. College teams are invited to design and build solar powered
houses that are affordable and attractive. The UM proposal, called WaterShed, will include
features such as rooftop solar panels, and will use rainwater and wind energy. The mini
eco-system also includes an edible green wall, where nutritious plants are grown and can
be picked and consumed. A total of 20 teams, from Belgium, China, New Zealand, and the
U.S., have been selected to participate in the eco-endeavor. Our sincere appreciation,
United States Department of Energy, for supporting this green initiative. Congratulations, University
of Maryland team, and all other involved groups. We are eager to see your fabulous Earth-loving
innovations in 2011.
