My name is dr. Károly Matolcsy and I am the the competition director of Solar Decathlon Europe 2019. In 2014 at the International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction (CIB) meeting a question was made up by the head of our French co-institute, as they have had a very successful event in Versialles, than how could we take this to the next level? Then we started to think, if it succeeded next to Paris, it could be a success also near Budapest, in Szentendre. There was a meeting in Barcelona, where we could meet with the former organizers for the first time. We were designated the right to organize this competition and we have been working on this project continuously since 2017. Teams have been doing extensive preparations to this compettion at home for one year and a half. Now at the fifth day of construction, houses are structurally completed. It is now much broader as a competiton, because the construction of a smart house, a sustainable house, an environmentally friendly house is also a task for the participants. There are 10 contests in 7 of which the jourors will evaluate the work of the Teams. The value-added renovation of an existing building is the responsibility of the decathletes. The traces of this were already found in previous competitions, but this was a particular challenge in ours. So, again, it is an energy-efficient and value-adding renovation of an existing building. Each Team thinks about the area in which these work. This can be an extension of a family house or a solution to add a complete floor to a house or it might be a classic house that adapts to local conditions. As a competition director, the most important role of mine is to provide the appropriate conditions for the competition. There were several provisos that we had to accomplish, just as to create a location where the competitors can move freely. The floor area itself is 20×20 meters and there is also an additional 10×20 meter service area. They have to work within this space, which is a special challenge for them, which means they have to maintain some order. If we look around, we can see that they are trying their best to satisfy these requirments. I think integrity is the greatest innovation today, so we can’t come up with just separate elements, but think in a certain way, how can we use these elements in an integrated manner, that mutually reinforce each other. Actually, this is the strongest part of innovation.
