In this video I’m going to show you how to make a homemade air conditioning for the car, the van or even for home I’ll use the compressor of a freezer and a radiator, which can be from a car or a computer Don’t think that it will be difficult, it is quite simple and the best thing is that this is the best way, because it imitates a real air conditioning that is, you don’t have to pour water so it evaporates, or ice all the time, no, this lasts indefinitely First, because for this I’ll use a real refrigerator that works with a compressor it has nothing to do with a normal car refrigerator, this one is the same as at home, but in a smaller size The difference is that the cheap ones that are portable, work with a Peltier cell, they are thermoelectrical actually they just lower a few degrees the outside temperature but this works with a compressor and refrigerant gas just like the air conditioning of your car or as I say, any fridge They are more expensive, but completely worth it they are used in the Dakar, the cars that cross the desert, or even at the most expensive motorhomes The first thing I did was removing the brand stickers first because I didn’t like them and second, because then people think they are paying me There are many refrigerators of this type, I have bought some more and this one is simply the cheapest but by far, like 3 times less and just looking through the side grid you see it has a compressor, copper tubes… it is a real refrigerator, you can even see the model and search for it on the Internet I was going to disassemble it but the screws are too deep and had no screwdriver like that In addition, 2 points that look like something stupid but will be super useful for this are that they’ve a USB right next to it and the cover can be removed, it has like 2 sticks, you pick them up and it comes out Well, before I began cutting and drilling things what I did was trying it, because if it didn’t cool as it said, it wouldn’t serve me I’ll explain in a minute the tests I did, for you to see the feasibility of the matter The main thing is that the car’s battery wouldn’t run out if I left it connected and no, it has a meter that if the voltage drops below 12.8, well that’s what you configure, it shuts down. Second, the noise, which wasn’t very annoying, it sounds less than an analog clock And the obvious, if it cooled, because it is a refrigerator, for days, weeks or months, without problems I’ve had it for a couple of months and great, for you to get an idea I put 2 glasses of water one at 20ºC and another at more than 50ºC, with the hot water from the tap that comes out burning Well, in less than an hour one of them was at 45ºC and the other at 17ºC, which I thought “fuck, that’s slow” but the water takes about 3h to freeze, so the air conditioning is going to work, but it is going to be slow but well, then you’ll see how to solve this because if not it wasn’t going to be worth it for the car, to turn it on and having to wait an hour for it to get cold After 3h they were ice, as I’d read, but this wasn’t what I was looking for, it was just a test to see that it works Already with this, after knowing that it can cool to -22ºC it was time to start making drills, but I didn’t want to drill the original fridge, so I changed the cover I went to a plastic store, I chose a cutting polypropylene board, which is a very dense and resistant plastic They cut it for me for free, because it wasn’t the exact measure by just a few millimeters with this cover it’ll really work better it was more expensive than the original cover itself and insulated better The problem is that when turning with the car, the cover ended up on the floor, so I had to put a joint with the felt used under the furniture was well fastened. Now we need a deposit in which we’re going to put antifreeze, well if you’re not going to put food put that if not, use alcohol and water as I’m going to use We also need a water pump that can withstand low temperatures, which I think any will do they do worst with the high ones I bought it with USB to connect it directly to the one that the fridge brought Then, we also need a radiator. You can use the car’s heating, which you can even find a copper one for 10/20€ in the junkyard or a computer one The rest of components are rubber tubes, flanges, clamps … very simple things. I chose a computer radiator because it already came with the fans at the back and everything prepared it was clean, had no rust, it was all advantages and the performance was only going to be a little worse In addition, the connectors are easier, simply putting the hose and tighten with a clamp However, I advise you to take the plugs that come as standard and put them as if it were a gasket because otherwise the clamps tighten the tube too much and break it, and you end up having leaks The tube has to be twice as long the distance between where you put the fridge to where you want the air out Then it has to be cut in half, carefully, so water comes in from one of the tubes and out from the other Before connecting anything, I checked that the source of water worked because by USB I didn’t expect it to have too much power, but it really doesn’t matter much with a little water circulating is enough Now we have to make a drill in the cover, it’s best if it is one of the sides, in a corner so it doesn’t bother much and we can place the deposit on one of the sides, to use the rest for drinks and things The hole has to be rounded, but rectangular to fit the USB and the 2 rubber tubes, being as tight as possible If then you put silicone around even better, so that the cold doesn’t escape through there I used a Tupper because if I used a jar which was rounded, it would end up rolling so it’s better if it is something squared You have to make the same holes for the lid, so that the tubes and the USB fit By the way, the tube of the water pump is plastic, if you put a metal clamp almost sure you’ll break it so tighten it with a flange and is more than enough After this the system would be practically finished and as you can see, it is very simple, there was no need to weld anything. It works the same as the radiator of the car’s heating but instead of taking hot water from the engine and throwing it out it takes cold water from the fridge and throws it out. The liquid cooling of a computer also works that way, but for heat instead of cold The radiator fans come with some computer connectors, but it is as simple as cutting them taking the negative and positive and connecting them to a cigarette lighter, which by the way the side is the negative and the bottom the positive With this it would work at 12 volts or even a little more and go quite fast but if you want to have less air or something like that, you could put a regulating roulette I’ll also leave that in the description of the video, the links and all that I’ve put the cable very short, since I have the cigarette lighter connector next to where I want to put the radiator that is, where the air normally comes out if not, I’ll connect it to this 120,000 milliamps battery which can make the fridge work for more than 13h The only thing left would be filling the tank which can be done with antifreeze if you aren’t going to use the refrigerator for food mainly because if there is a leak and it falls into the food or drink, and you swallow it, you could die. If not, I used distilled water, which leaves no residue on the radiator or anywhere else when evaporated Before putting it in the car, I put it on the table, while I was with the computer to see how it worked throughout the afternoon and it worked badly, I had a problem. 2h later or even before, 1h later, it stopped giving cold and I thought it wasn’t going to work but it was simply that the water was freezing it’s obvious, but I believed that being in motion it wouldn’t happen but the tubes, being so thin, were clogged, filled with ice because it was water at 20ºC below zero Since the water pump had little power, it couldn’t remove the ice so I had to wait for the water to heat up, melt the ice and put alcohol, so it wouldn’t freeze again the only thing that is also toxic, but well, most things I’m going to put are cans or packaged things and I’ve already checked there are no leaks After that it was perfect and I had cold air all afternoon Now, I just had to see if this was better than the typical fan, because otherwise it would have been useless I would have thrown a lot of money and would have been all afternoon fooling around To sum it up, yes, the air that goes out is at 17ºC approximately and the one of the fan at about 30ºC in a small room in which it is quite hot because I have the computer and other gadgets but after an hour the difference begins to be notable, it begins to lower the temperature 16, 15, 12 and the minimum thing that I’ve seen has been to 5ºC, when I already put it in the car with the fridge at the copilot’s feet and the radiator where the air usually goes out Actually, if you put the radiator in front of the aerators, you wouldn’t need to connect the fans to the lighter but it wasn’t the case since this is an old and it only has aerators on the sides and for the glass as you see the air comes out at 7ºC that is quite nice especially inside a vehicle that has been under the sun and the temperature continues to drop as the refrigerator is still connected Besides, at least in this car or van, you can continue entering and using the passenger seats a little more uncomfortable but well, the legs are fine once you sit Anyway it’s much better to lose a little legroom but be cool throughout a trip However, don’t think that this is going to cool like an air conditioner, the whole room at 0ºC no, it’s just going to give you cold air that the fans wouldn’t otherwise give If with this you are still hot, you can get an ice cream or soda that in the fridge are going to be very cold but don’t put cans and at -20ºC because they’ll explode, put them in bottles or plastic things Another thing is that I think that food is like ice cream, if it defrosts and then freezes again they get bad but well if you catch them with the lid they are also crushed I’m not going to use this while driving unless I make a long trip in summer of 5/6h because I see it a little uncomfortable to do it daily what I’m going to do is leave it in the back as a fridge and also as air conditioning while I’m in bed because this is a van that I made with bed, sink and also very important solar panel that is, it has an electrical installation that I can leave connected as long as I want so to have cold air I won’t have to be waiting for the water to cool, simply I connect the fans and pump Also, when the pump is closed and without pouring water outside, so to speak, it doesn’t spend anything when it reaches the desired temperature, -20ºC the compressor shuts off, stops giving cold and it simply is maintained. I am very satisfied with the result, because the other idea I had was a little crazier it was to take a portable air conditioner, a generator, put it together and make a mess you wouldn’t imagine besides it made a lot of noise and occupied a lot, and this only cost me 200€ less than half of what the previous fridge cost and works the same or better.
